Virtual Mentorship Opportunity: High Schoolers and Northern Illinois University

The Illinois Science and Technology Coalition (ISTC) is looking for volunteers with diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise to participate in virtual skills-based mentoring of Illinois high school students through its Mentor Matching Engine (MME) platform. In the upcoming academic semester, we have a real need for mentors in the fields of Environment, Sustainability, & Energy, as we have a growing number of high school students with an interest.

For only one hour per week, mentors can increase exposure to career pathways for students who have been historically excluded from these fields by guiding them through research projects of their choosing in STEM, humanities, sociology, social justice, and more.

Student Positions are live

There are two student positions (hydrology and math/statistics) that are open until 12/30.

Student Trainee (Hydrology)

Resources for Students + Graduating Seniors

Students who will be enrolled in Fall 2023 can participate in the Summer and Fall 2023 Scientists-in-Parks Internship Program. This program pairs students with park staff to accomplish a specific project. For example, the Fog Monitoring Program Interns were funded through this program. The best positions have Direct Hire Authorities (it will say in the position description if a hiring authority is offered), which allow interns to be non-competitively hired into federal jobs after graduation. Both undergraduate and graduate students can apply. Applications for Summer 2023 open around December of 2022.

For info on Scientists-in-Parks:

For those who are graduating soon, there are plenty of opportunities for employment with the National Park Service. Remember that parks need all career types and trainings to run (e.g., tradespeople, accountants, IT professionals, educators, maintenance technicians and scientists). You can apply for any job that is listed as "open to the public", but the "recent graduates" pathway is a great way to get hired up to 2 years after your graduation. That's how I got hired and I really liked having a designated mentor through the first year of employment. Make sure to check out federal resumes online - they have unique formatting and information requirements.

All federal positions are posted here: USAJOBS - The Federal Government's official employment site

There are also positions that aren't federal positions, but are considered "partner staff" at National Parks. These are generally shorter appointments, and can help you get more experience.

Great Basin Institute Research Associate Program: Research Associate Program - The Great Basin Institute - Services

The Sierra Nevada Inventory & Monitoring Network (https://www.nps.gov/im/sien/work-with-us.htm) has a crop of positions with applications opening on Monday (via USAjobs) that will only be open next week. Their website also has great information about preparing a federal resume.

Food systems challenge hackathon

As you may be aware the Office of Innovation is hosting the first food systems challenge hackathon on November 5 & 6 this year. This event is not a traditional coding hackathon but more of a societal hack focused on creating solutions to one of the following challenges: Food waste, Regionalization of our food system and Human diversity in agriculture. This is a free event to all college students including grad students and comes with meals and prizes.

We are still in need of students to participate in the event, so I am asking if anyone would be interested and willing for me to talk to your classes for 10 to 15 minutes about the event.

I have included the poster that contains the QR code that will take them to the registration page.

Goodwill of Northern Illinois Job Opportunities

Goodwill of Northern Illinois is hiring! Goodwill is reliant on the generosity of their donors and their amazing donations that pass through their doors everyday. But that is only the beginning. By respecting these donations they are able to create a financially sound organization. They then use our financial resources to help people improve their lives while also making a positive impact on our planet through recycling and repurposing. Goodwill is inherently a ‘green’ organization, since we literally recycle and re-purpose millions of pounds of donated goods a year – everything from lightly used clothing to computers, housewares to handbags, books to boots and toys for tots. These items become the ‘recycled’ merchandise they sell at their stores. They strive to be green throughout their organization and reuse and reduce waste through a variety of recycling streams in our quest toward zero % waste. This is especially a great opportunity for environmental studies students to work for!

Student Research Funding Opportunity!

Congressman Sean Casten 2023 Internships

In spring 2023 there will be internship opportunities in district office for Sean Casten. The program will start Mid-January and run through May.

District office interns will be provided the opportunity to assist the office in helping constituents navigate federal agencies ranging from topics like immigration, Medicare, and veterans affairs. District office interns will also be able to attend virtual webinars held by different government agencies and work with staff on various district-based projects and events. They will also be asked to assist with office work including answering phones and drafting letters. The internship will be held both virtually and in-person this Spring, depending on for which internship position an applicant applies.

The internship categories include Constituent Relations and Casework interns, who will be in-person assisting with the frontline operations, helping staff, and getting hands-on experience with casework and outreach. Research internships, which can be virtual, will conduct research for our outreach and casework teams (ex: list building, community news tracking, local issue background research, and event brainstorming). Applicants can indicate that they are open to participating in any of the three types of internships. Stipends are available for a couple interns who have financial need.

Below is the link to the application page (the District application is at the bottom):

https://casten.house.gov/services/internships

The application deadline is November 11, 2022. They will work with school schedules and allow interns to only work certain days of the week at certain times, though the applicant must be available at some point between 9 am – 5 pm. There is a preference for students with in-district ties.
