CSEAS is hosting a Statement of Purpose writing workshop on Thursday at 3:30 in Founders 293. While some of the focus will be on those applying for the Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship, this should be helpful for any student considering graduate school, applying for fellowships, etc.

Graduate and PhD Student Fellowships - University of Delaware

We are pleased to invite applications for graduate student fellowship in wind energy and the storage of intermittent renewables at the University of Delaware. Delaware houses a leading wind power research program with emphasis on the burgeoning offshore market. Twelve-month stipends are approximately $28,000 for Ph.D. students and slightly less for Master’s students.

We are particularly interested in fellows whose research interests are in one of the following topics:

  1. environmental risk assessment
  2. geological and geotechnical aspects of wind projects
  3. grid integration
  4. marine logistics, including deployment and installation
  5. remote sensing for offshore wind power site characterization
  6. socio-economic and cultural dimensions of wind power
  7. spatial planning
  8. wind meteorology, resource assessment and wind turbine wakes

Fellows will be advised by a faculty member whose principal appointment is in Marine Policy (MP), Physical Ocean Science and Engineering (POSE), Oceanography, Geography or Geological Sciences, depending on interest and research interest match.

Each fellow is required to be admitted to the master’s or PhD program in MP, POSE, Geological Sciences, Geography or Climatology (PhD only).   You must apply and be accepted as a graduate student to be eligible for the fellowship.

Interested prospective graduate students should visit here and see the attached which provides additional details.  If you intend to apply for the fellowship, you should notify, Sharon Weigner, swiegner@udel.edu, and Jeremy Firestone, jf@udel.edu.

PhD and MS Degrees at University of Delaware - Department of Geography

The Geospatial Data Science Cluster at the University of Delaware’s Department of Geography
applications for PhD and MS positions. The department offers PhD and MS degrees in
Geography, a PhD degree in Climatology, and a Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information
Science. Students can also pursue the university’s MS degree in Data Science through the
Geospatial Data Science Cluster.

We have a growing faculty in Geospatial Data Science specialized in GIScience, Remote Sensing, Machine Learning, Big Data Analytics and Modeling, with applications in Land Change Science, Human Dimensions of Climate Change, Sustainability, and Climatology. The department also has strength in regional and large-scale climate modeling, weather forecasting, atmospheric observation, ecohydrology, political ecology, and critical geography.

Geospatial Data Science Cluster Faculty:

Tracy DeLiberty (tracyd@udel.edu)
geographic information systems, remote sensing, climatology

Pinki Mondal (mondalp@udel.edu)
remote sensing, GIS, environmental geography, land cover and land use change, agriculture,
food security, climate impact

Jing Gao (jinggao@udel.edu)
geospatial data science, machine learning, human dimensions of climate change, urban land
change, spatial population, uncertainty analysis and modeling

We look for self-motivated creative thinkers, with excellent written and verbal communication
skills, and ability to work in interdisciplinary environments. Ideal candidates have strong
backgrounds/interests in quantitative methods (e.g., spatial analysis and modeling, statistics),
programming (e.g., Python, R), database management, and geo-computation. Prior research
experience in geography and environmental science is a plus.

Competitive funding packages will be offered. Applications are accepted by January 5, 2019for Fall 2019 enrollment athttps://grad.udel.edu/apply, but interested applicants are encouraged to contact faculty of mutual interests in advance. Women, underrepresented minorities, and individuals with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply. International students are welcome. General questions may be directed to our Graduate Director Dr. April Veness (veness@udel.edu).

GEOG 490/690: Community Geography

Community Geography (GEOG 490/690) is our service learning course where students will work with the instructor in the development and execution of an applied research project in service to a local community agency. This spring, the research project will be for the DeKalb County Economic Development Corporation and will incorporate perception, place making, and place utilization in the campus area in support of planning for the recently approved Northern Illinois Center for Community Sustainability.

This course also contributes to the undergraduate GIS and Graduate GIA Certificate programs, and pre-requites can be waived with instructor approval.

Please contact Dr. Autumn James (ajames11@niuedu) with any questions or for further information.

Graduate Research Opportunities

Our research group, led by Dr. Peleg Kremer and Dr. Kabindra Shakya at the department of Geography & the Environment at Villanova University, is recruiting graduate students at the Masters level interested in studying fine scale spatial patterns in urban air pollution and the relationship between urban structure and ecosystem services.
Our project, briefly outlined here, is supported by the NSF GSS program. Accepted students will pursue an MS degree in Environmental Science and design thesis projects aligned with project parameters. Full funding and travel allowances are available. Additional competitive funding opportunities exist within the department. Background in environmental science and/or GIS and remote sensing are highly desirable.

Interested students should review the website of the graduate program in Environmental Science for program and application information as well as Dr. Kremer and Dr. Shakya’s webpages.

Informal inquiries can be directed to Dr. Kremer at peleg.kremer@villanova.edu and Dr. Shakya at kabindra.shakya@villanova.edu

Master's Level Internship Opportunity in France

Two master's internships will be offered in France on the interactions
between pastoralism and the reintroduction of the brown bear in the

Pyrenees.
Ideal candidates would be master students on Environmental
Anthropology and Ecology. These internships will be in partnership with the
association Dissonances and the Laboratoire GEODE (Toulouse). Candidates
should send their CV and motivation letters by Dec, 20th 2018 to

Madagascar Study Abroad - June 7-July 7 2019

Topics include (1) goals and methods of studying primates in the wild, (2) Madagascar's evolutionary history and recent extinctions, including lab work at the University of Antananarivo and (3) current conservation threats. The course is largely experiential, with an independent project (on either extant fauna or recently extinct lemurs) dominating the students' time in the field. Whereas our main focus is primates (specifically lemurs, extinct and extant), students interested in studying other elements of the ecosystem are welcome.
