Program Highlights

• Work directly with sharks and rays in their natural habitat

• Learn professional marine field research techniques

• Gain hands-on experience collecting and recording scientific data

• Work alongside experienced marine researchers and instructors

• Ideal for students interested in marine biology, conservation, and wildlife research careers

AASHE Member Community Digest for Monday May 12, 2025

https://www.betterfoodfoundation.org/take-action/students/

Want to make positive food systems change on your campus?

Join the DefaultVeg Internship Program to champion sustainable food systems while gaining valuable skills and experience.

The DefaultVeg Internship Program is for changemakers (like you!) who want to bring the Plant-Based Food by Default movement to their university. Equipped with essential tools and guidance, ambassadors are empowered to engage positively with university decision makers, dining staff, student clubs, offices, coffee shops, and campus event staff to advocate for adopting plant-based defaults and nudges.

Our approach emphasizes collaboration over confrontation, which is popular because it preserves freedom of choice and works anywhere food is served, from a dorm party to a dining hall. Most importantly, many DefaultVeg Ambassadors have greatly impacted campus food systems.

By encouraging your campus to adopt climate-smart, plant-forward food, you’re promoting a broader cultural shift toward sustainable and inclusive food services both on and off campus.

The Educational Research, Evaluation, and Assessment Program

The Educational Research, Evaluation, and Assessment program equips students to design, conduct and evaluate educational research and evaluation studies; select and implement suitable qualitative and quantitative data analytic procedures; design and evaluate assessments and other instruments; and relate empirical findings to educational and social science policies and practices.

Here is some information about our M.S. in Educational Research, Evaluation, and Assessment program:

  • The M.S. in Educational Research, Evaluation, and Assessment program  is designed to equip professionals with broad training in the theory and practice of qualitative and quantitative research, program evaluation, and assessment/measurement.
  • Within our comprehensive and rigorous core curriculum, you can pursue specialized areas of professional interest (e.g., advanced qualitative research design, statistical analysis) through elective courses. The M.S. degree also combines student-centered courses with a variety of engaged learning experiences (e.g., research, internships) to provide a top-quality graduate school experience.
  • Our students are prepared for careers as researchers, evaluators, assessment specialists and data analysts in educational, business, government, community-based and other professional settings.
  • The program is also well-positioned to equip students for research-focused doctoral study in the social sciences.
  • Our program can be completed entirely online or via combination of online and face-to-face coursework. Courses are designed to be flexible to accommodate a variety of schedules with synchronous and asynchronous options.
  • The Department of Educational Technology, Research and Assessment also offers three 18-credit Certificates of Graduate Study (CGS) related to educational research, evaluation, and assessment:
  • NIU tuition is highly affordable and numerous scholarships are available through the Department and University.
  • No GRE/MAT test scores or letters of recommendation are required of applicants, and the Department of Educational Technology, Research and Assessment will waive the application fee ($60).
  • Admission is guaranteed for NIU undergraduate students who meet the Graduate School’s admissions requirements. NIU undergraduates with 90+ credit hours completed may start their M.S. in Educational Research, Evaluation, and Assessment while completing their undergraduate degree.

Thank you in advance for your assistance with our program’s recruitment efforts. We would also be happy to arrange an online informational session for interested students. We can be contacted at etra@niu.edu if either you or prospective students have any questions or require further information. A program flyer is also attached.

Sincerely,

Todd Reeves, Ph.D, Associate Professor, Educational Research, Evaluation, and Assessment

Summer Fellowships ESA

                                                       Seeking Field-Trained Students

USGS is hiring students for Summer 2024

The US Geological Survey is seeking to create a pathway whereby students with excellent training in biological field methods can be nominated and apply for summer internships at USGS. Selected applicants will be offered internships at available field, laboratory, or office related scientific positions throughout the country for up to 5 months. USGS places interns wherever the project scientists need them. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, some internships may be conducted remotely.

The USGS Cooperative Summer Fellowship Program is seeking undergraduate students who have strong preparation in skills valuable to USGS. We are particularly interested in providing opportunities for students for whom an internship is a unique opportunity, and could help propel them toward a professional path. ESA and USGS are committed to diversity and inclusion. We especially encourage field course and program directors to nominate students from underrepresented communities in ecology.
