Water research opportunity for students IL

Jennifer Murphy is a hydrologist with the US Geological Survey at the Central Midwest Water Science Center. She leads a national team of scientists trying to develop a proxy for harmful algal blooms in rivers (focusing on excessive algal biomass as opposed to algal toxins, right now). They have an opportunity to bring on a student (or a few) to help with their effort.  She's hoping there may be students (undergrad through grad) in and around the Chicago area and/or Champaign-Urbana that may be interested in this opportunity.

 

Water Resources Data Analyst

Students will support a team of scientists working to develop a proxy for harmful algal blooms (HABs) in rivers and streams. Level of involvement will depend on skills and experience. At a minimum, students will query and retrieve surface water records from scientific databases; pre- and post-process data for use in empirical analyses and models; review scientific literature and reports on HAB identification and forecasting; and preform targeted analyses. This work will be entirely remote, but students must be able to visit our DeKalb, IL office or Urbana, IL office when necessary. Desired (but not required) skills include working knowledge of the statistical software R (or other programing language), undergraduate course in statistics; previous course work in environmental science, biology, hydrology, ecological, and/or river science. This is a great opportunity to work with a team of scientists from across the country on a highly relevant and important topic. Groundwater Training Course

 Groundwater Relief is a charity that provides technical support to humanitarian and development organizations in order to supply safe water to the world's poorest and most vulnerable people. There's a training opportunity that may be of interest to MSc Hydrogeology students or alumni, and any other students within the department of geological and environmental sciences, who might wish to pursue a career in the humanitarian or WASH sectors.

In August they are running a 4 week training course - the Groundwater Development School (GDS) in Uganda.
This opportunity offers students a chance to gain training and practical field
experience on every aspect of siting, developing, managing, and monitoring a
groundwater borehole in a professional environment. Over 4 weeks in late July/August
participants will learn how to conduct hydrogeological surveying,
drilling, pump testing and water quality testing, all from expert
hydrogeologists and WASH engineers. The GDS will also offer formative
experience in humanitarian and development work.

Footnote on Covid-19

With the rapid role out of vaccines across many countries and the easing
of measures in Uganda, we are feeling optimistic that the Coronavirus
situation will have improved enough by July that this course will be
possible. During the course, precautions will be put in place to
minimise risk. Additionally, as we are fully aware of the fluidity of
change at the moment, any fees paid will be fully refundable if the
course cannot go ahead or if a participant cannot attend due to changes
in the coronavirus situation (providing they have reasonable evidence of
this).
