Friday - legislative panel

The purpose of POWER is to empower student advocates, who have previous experience planning and/or participating in activities centered on the tenets of social justice, to enhance their tool kits for the purpose of community organizing.  Our goal is for student advocates to create spaces strategically and effectively for intentional and culturally specific planning focused on coalition building while allowing participants to work as allies and collaborators.

Kicking off POWER, all (NIU students, staff, faculty and community) are welcome to attend the legislative panel, happening at 10:15-11:45 on Friday at PCLB 100. Please see the attached flyer. We will be hearing from Representatives Theresa Mah and Maurice West and Senator Celena Villanueva.

Please forward to your department’s faculty and students. It’s a perfect way to kick off the weekend commemorating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Congressional Internships Spring 2026 - Illinois 6th District

 Hello,

We are reaching out on behalf of Congressman Sean Casten’s office to let you know about internship opportunities for both our Washington, D.C. and Lombard offices this summer. As an office representing the 6th congressional district of Illinois, we are excited about the opportunity to recruit students from Illinois colleges and universities for this program.

Applications for our spring internship program will be open from October 24th through November 30th, 2025. The form to apply can be accessed here.

Legislative interns in the Washington, D.C. office will assist with day-to-day operations of the office, including answering calls from constituents, attending committee hearings and briefings, working on projects with legislative and communications staff, scheduling and leading tours of the U.S. Capitol, and assisting with constituent correspondence for our Mail Program. Interns will have the opportunity to gain insight into the legislative process, network with staff, and learn about the inner workings of a congressional office. The Washington, D.C. office is seeking interns with a strong attention to detail and a readiness to learn, who are able to work a full-time in-person schedule, Monday-Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

District office interns in the Lombard, IL office will assist with office operations, including answering calls from constituents, assisting caseworkers in helping constituents navigate federal agencies, performing research for our outreach and casework teams, drafting letters, and assisting with various projects. Interns will also have the opportunity to attend virtual webinars hosted by various government agencies and work with staff on district-based projects and events. The Lombard office is seeking interns who are able to work in person, either full or part-time.

The spring internship will run from mid-January through mid-May 2026. Individuals with ties to Illinois’ sixth district are strongly encouraged to apply.

Congressman Sean Casten 2023 Internships

In spring 2023 there will be internship opportunities in district office for Sean Casten. The program will start Mid-January and run through May.

District office interns will be provided the opportunity to assist the office in helping constituents navigate federal agencies ranging from topics like immigration, Medicare, and veterans affairs. District office interns will also be able to attend virtual webinars held by different government agencies and work with staff on various district-based projects and events. They will also be asked to assist with office work including answering phones and drafting letters. The internship will be held both virtually and in-person this Spring, depending on for which internship position an applicant applies.

The internship categories include Constituent Relations and Casework interns, who will be in-person assisting with the frontline operations, helping staff, and getting hands-on experience with casework and outreach. Research internships, which can be virtual, will conduct research for our outreach and casework teams (ex: list building, community news tracking, local issue background research, and event brainstorming). Applicants can indicate that they are open to participating in any of the three types of internships. Stipends are available for a couple interns who have financial need.

Below is the link to the application page (the District application is at the bottom):

The application deadline is November 11, 2022. They will work with school schedules and allow interns to only work certain days of the week at certain times, though the applicant must be available at some point between 9 am – 5 pm. There is a preference for students with in-district ties.
