The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is pleased to announce a free Gilman Climate Leaders Virtual Seminar Series focused on climate change and environmental sustainability, which will launch on March 24, 2022.  The series, hosted by Duke University's Energy Initiative and Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions, has been created under the auspices of the Gilman Program with a primary audience of Gilman current scholars and alumni, but is also open and free to all American students at U.S. colleges and universities. Conference Manager - Wild Things 2021

 

Position Description

The Conference Manager, working under the direction of the leadership team, is responsible for the successful planning and execution of the Wild Things Conference which will be held in February of 2023. 

 

The Wild Things Conference aims to provide two products: 

   A world-class event that facilitates the dissemination of current best practices in Ecological Restoration and Conservation

   The promotion and development of Volunteerism within the Ecological Restoration and Conservation fields

 

The Conference Manager is currently the sole, paid position within the Wild Things organization. The position is part-time, hourly and has a term of approximately one year. 

 

The work load in the early months of the job is considerably less than half-time and increases steadily as the event date approaches. The final 2 to 3 months before the event is full-time to over-time. Total employment hours are approximately equal to half-time employment over the course of one year.

 

The Manager will work remotely with a number of meetings held is locations TBD by the Manager.

 

This position is paid on an hourly basis and does not provide benefits.

 

Duties & Responsibilities

- Creation of schedules and budgets in partnership with leadership team and committee heads

- Creation and execution of reporting process to conference leadership and steering committee

- Recruitment, administration and empowerment of volunteer working committees including but not limited to:

   Steering Committee

   Program Committee (content)

   Venue (room layout, way finding signage, AV coord., etc.)

   Food and Drink

   Logistics

   Exhibits

   Sponsorship

   Scholarship

   Tech & IT (Online Registration tool, Online Program tool, Wild Things Community website)

   Ticketing and attendee communications

   Day-Of Volunteer recruitment and logistical leadership

   Communications (graphic and written messaging, program book design & coord.)

   Marketing (media, grassroots & other outlets)

   Registration

- Effective administration of budgets, schedules and work plans resulting in a successful conference 

- Management of a post-conference reflection process

Environmental Education Job Opening

The St. Charles Park District has an immediate opening for individuals with a Bachelors degree in Environmental Education , Natural Resources, Biology or Education at our Hickory Knolls Discovery Center, a nature education facility in St. Charles, IL.

This is a part-time position for a Nature Programs Facilitator II and provides opportunities for a wide-range of experiences in delivering nature and environmental education content to audiences ranging from casual visitors in a nature center setting to school programs, scout programs, adult programs, camps and even birthday parties.

This is a year round position and is eligible for retirement benefits through the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund.

Paid summer research positions at Nachusa Grasslands

Stream and Wildlife Research Technicians (2); DeKalb, IL

 

We are looking to hire two technicians to work on a Master’s student research project which involves studying the potential impacts of beaver dam building patterns on hydrology at a tallgrass prairie preserve in Illinois. This position involves wading through streams, collecting water samples, installing and maintaining wildlife camera traps, and point-counting stumps. Other possible responsibilities include entering data into Microsoft Excel, analyzing spatial data in ArcGIS, processing field samples in a lab, and organizing pictures. Additionally, applicants should have a good knowledge of standard ecological survey protocols. This is a great opportunity for early career scientists to gain fieldwork experience while working in restored and remnant tallgrass prairie ecosystems.

Successful applicants will be employed through Northern Illinois University (NIU). NIU is an AA/EEO institution and is an equal opportunity employer. Successful applicants and project leaders will establish a working document on field safety procedures (including compliance with relevant Covid-19 regulations) and avenues for reporting workplace misconduct.

Position dates: May 30th  – July 29th (slightly flexible if necessary)

Salary: $12/hour 30 hours per week (total of 9 weeks)

Survey site: Nachusa Grasslands (near Lost Nation, IL)

Work schedule: 4 days per week, Monday-Thursday. Work will begin at 0700 and last on site until 1300 (not including travel). The overall plan is to collect field data in the morning, then process collections in DeKalb in the afternoon.

Housing: Housing is not provided through this position. Hired technicians are encouraged to find summer housing in DeKalb, IL to allow for car-pooling to field sites (at no additional cost). Technicians are responsible for securing transportation to field sites if housing is secured in a location outside of DeKalb, IL. Primitive camping is available at the field site during the work week. Local candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

Required qualifications:

  • familiarity with wildlife camera traps;
  • knowledge of standard ecological survey procedures;
  • ability to record and enter ecological data;
  • working towards a Bachelor’s degree in wildlife ecology, natural resources management, or a related field;
  • proficiency in Microsoft Excel;
  • ability to hike through rough terrain while carrying up to 35 pounds of equipment;
  • ability to effectively communicate and work with fellow technicians and project leaders;
  • ability to work in adverse field conditions (early morning hours; hot, humid conditions; biting flies; wild bison; etc.);
  • ability to work and navigate in remote field settings;
  • ability to describe project details to the public;
  • compliance with appropriate safety protocols

Preferred qualifications:

  • a Bachelor’s degree in wildlife ecology, natural resources management, or a related field;
  • experience conducting similar fieldwork/surveys;
  • experience using GPS devices;
  • possession of a valid driver’s license;
  • experience operating 4WD trucks and/or UTVs;
  • experience analyzing spatial data in ArcGIS

GEOG 306: Severe & Hazardous Weather—FULLY ONLINE COURSE

Examination of fundamentals of atmospheric phenomena with an emphasis on understanding concepts and processes behind severe manifestations of weather and climate. Physical aspects of extratropical cyclones, winter weather phenomena, thunderstorm phenomena, tropical weather systems, and large-scale, longer-term weather events are analyzed. RCC Fellowship- Paid Opportunity for Student Environmental Organizers

he Rachel Carson Council Fellowship Program is now accepting applications for the academic year 2022 - 2023. The application deadline is April 1st.

The RCC Fellowship Program will select 25 environmental leaders from colleges and universities across the nation. To apply to the program, students propose their own projects that are focused on sustainability and environmental justice to be carried out on their campuses and in their communities. Former fellows have run projects ranging from divestment campaigns to podcasts on environmental justice issues and campaigns for renewable energy infrastructure on their campuses. Benefits and Requirements for the program: 

  • All RCC Fellows receive a $2,000 stipend distributed throughout the academic year.
  • Opportunity to attend the RCC American Environmental Leadership Institute for 5 days from July 24-28, 2022.
  • Fellows receive mentorship and training from RCC Staff over the course of their Fellowship term, including the development of a work plan for their projects over the course of their term.
