One Field Inclusive Travel Award ($2000) will be awarded to a student (undergraduate, masters, doctoral, or postdoc), to help attend a scientific conference, training, or workshop taking place in the spring/summer 2024 year.

The application deadline is April 1, 2024 at 11:59 PM ET.

Upon completion of travel, willingness to provide a photograph and a ~500-2000 write-up about what the award was used towards for the webpage is also a condition. Applicant should also anticipate requirements from award sponsors. Applicant may also be asked to present during a future #FieldInclusiveWeek.

Eligibility

Applicants must attend an institution in the U.S. International students who attend an institution in the U.S. and/or have a U.S. bank account are eligible. Travel must take place in the U.S. Students outside of the U.S. are not eligible at this time.

Soliciting undergrad applications for REU: Interdisciplinary Problem Solving in Human Dominated Wetland Ecosystems

Here is information about a summer program for undergraduate students at RIT in Rochester, NY. 

This Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program emphasizes engaging students in interdisciplinary earth systems research that builds collaboration and communication skills for solving complex environmental problems. We will use wetland restoration as a lens through which participants will get hands-on experience studying the interactions between science and society that shape ecosystem functions and services.  This is an interdisciplinary program and we welcome participants from all academic majors who are interested in environmental science questions. We especially welcome applications from students in Environmental Studies and Environmental Science. This 10-week program will run from Sunday, May 22 to Saturday, July 30. Participants are provided with a $6,000 stipend for the summer, plus reimbursement for travel to/from Rochester, on-campus housing, and a meal allowance.

This program is for students who are enrolled in a college or university, including community college, and who will not yet have completed their undergraduate degree by the end of the summer session. This program is particularly well suited for students who will be completing their second or third year and who have limited access to research opportunities at their home institution. We encourage women, members of under-represented minorities, and deaf or hard-of-hearing students to apply. NSF funding requirements restrict participation to students who are US citizens, US nationals, or permanent residents. 

Projects will be grouped into interdisciplinary research clusters that include the following approaches: (i) biogeochemistry and ecology, (ii) sociological feedbacks, and (iii) geospatial patterns and scaling. This summer research experience centers around four key components: (1) mentored research projects, (2) interdisciplinary skill development, (3) professional development workshops, and (4) scientific communication and outreach.  Students will participate in weekly workshops focusing on both interdisciplinary research skills and professional development. Skills workshops are designed to expose all participants to the wide range of approaches that are used in interdisciplinary earth science research, with topics ranging from sequencing to remote sensing. Professional development workshops will focus on scientific best practices and communication skills and will culminate in activities where students will disseminate their research in a range of settings, including youth programs, community events, and RIT’s undergraduate research symposium.

The Latino Center Alternative Spring Break Application

For the cost of round-trip airfare, spend your spring break in Arizona, creating sustainable, community-led change from the ground up.

The 2022 Latino Center Alternative Spring Break, March 12-March 19, 2022, will take 10 NIU students to the Pinetop-Lakeside area (about 3 hours from Phoenix) where they will participate in projects related to water, food, agriculture, and education.

Colorado Undergraduate Field Studies Course | Rocky Mountain Field Institute

WHAT: Rocky Mountain Field Institute (RMFI) is recruiting undergraduate students for its annual college-accredited field studies course, Earth Corps. Earth Corps is an 18-day field studies course that provides motivated, environmentally conscious undergraduate students the opportunity to live and learn in the incredible natural classroom of the Colorado mountains. Students who complete the program will earn 4 college credits in Geography transferable to their respective college/university and will also receive a Natural Resource Technician Certificate. 

 

WHERE: In 2022, Earth Corps students will live at the Crags Campground near Colorado Springs, Colorado for 18 days and will help construct the new Devils Playground Trail to the top of Pikes Peak - America's Mountain! In addition to gaining experience in trail construction, students will develop key outdoor skills throughout the program and through excursions to the summit of Pikes Peak and other outdoor pursuits. Academic and industry experts will also provide lectures on public lands management, geography, cultural history of the Pikes Peak Region, botany, and other related topics. Students will learn and practice outdoor leadership, Leave No Trace ethics, backcountry navigation, and risk management skills.

 

WHEN: July 18 - August 4, 2022

 

PROGRAM COST: $1,500 (This will cover program costs including tuition, staff, and all project equipment, food, supplies, and course materials). Needs-based scholarships are available for those who qualify. Upon completion of the course, students receive 4 credits in Geography from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs transferrable to the student's respective college or university.

Summer 2022 NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates program: crop diversity and rural livelihoods in Vermont and Uganda

In Summer 2022 the University of Vermont in collaboration with Sterling College and Bioversity International will be hosting an NSF-REU program which provides 8 U.S. undergraduate students from across the country with an 8-week fully funded summer research experience studying relationships between on-farm crop diversity and livelihoods in rural Vermont and rural Uganda. Our program includes 5 weeks of on-campus training in applied social science research methods, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), statistical analysis, and written and oral communication. This training is then followed by a 3-week applied field experience based in Hoima, Uganda [travel conditions allowing] focused on biocultural heritage of crops, crop conservation, sustainable agriculture, and cross-cultural relationships. In the event that international travel is not possible due to Covid-19 restrictions, field experiences will be based at the Rian Fried Center for Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems at Sterling College in Craftsbury, VT, where we will continue to work remotely with our project partners in Uganda.

The REU Site program is open to students all over the country, with a particular emphasis on community college students, 2-year college students, low-income students, and underrepresented groups. We are seeking students who have demonstrated a track record of engagement and hard work, but who also may have not had access to the kinds of hands-on applied interdisciplinary research that our program offers. There is no requirement of strong expertise or past research experience in agriculture, GIS, or social science - just a demonstrated willingness to work hard, learn new techniques, and be a strong member of a student team. The program comes with a generous stipend ($4,800 for the 8-week program) and covers all living and travel expenses for the June-August summer program, including transportation to and from the University of Vermont, and all other airfare, ground travel and lodging expenses.

NSF REU Program at the University of Vermont and Sterling College

We are now accepting applications for a Summer 2022 NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program based at the University of Vermont and Sterling College. This REU will provide eight American undergraduate students from diverse academic backgrounds an opportunity to conduct interdisciplinary research on the ecological, economic and cultural roles of on-farm crop diversity in rural Vermont and rural Uganda.

Under the eight-week summer REU program students will receive training at the University of Vermont (UVM) in rural development theory, social survey research methods, spatial analysis using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and written and oral communication. Working with partners in Uganda students will collect and analyze original farm, household and spatial data from smallholder farms and surrounding communities, and work closely with faculty mentors to prepare presentations and manuscripts on links between crop diversity and livelihood outcomes.

Completed applications including 2 letters of recommendation can be submitted online via (https://www.uvm.edu/cals/cdae/reu-in-uganda) and review of applications will begin on January 15^th and continue until filled. The 2022 Summer REU Site program will run from approximately June 14th – August 9^th, with some flexibility depending on Covid-19 travel restrictions, safety precautions, and quarantine needs. All travel costs will be covered by NSF and the summer program includes a generous stipend. All participants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents enrolled at a U.S. college or university at the time of the program (seniors graduating in Spring 2022 are not eligible).
