Anegada Rock Iguana Conservation Field Expedition

Gain real-world wildlife research experience while helping to conserve one of the Caribbean’s most endangered reptiles. 

Student participants will gain 

 experience in:

•Mark–recapture techniques 

• Radio-telemetry 

• Camera trapping 

• Distance sampling/population surveys 

• GPS navigation and field mapping 

• Nest surveys and reproductive ecology

• Working with a scent-detection dog

Dates: Session 1: June 7-15 ● Session 2: June 16-24●

Session 3: June 25-July 3 ● Session 4: July 5-13

Location: Anegada, British Virgin Islands (BVI) 

Cost: $1,725 for one session

Group size: Seven to 12 participants plus project leader 

Cost includes: One night on Tortola, BVI; one round-trip ferry ticket from Tortola to Anegada; seven nights on Anegada; meals on Anegada; field supplies; transportation on Anegada; and all routine expenses on Anegada.

Cost does not include: Airfare to Tortola, BVI; meals on Tortola; cab fare to and from the airport

Hands-On Wildlife Research in the British Virgin Islands Join conservation biologists working to recover one of the world’s most endangered reptiles — the Anegada Rock Iguana. This immersive field experience allows undergraduate students to participate directly in ongoing conservation research while gaining practical skills used by wildlife biologists in the field. Participants will work alongside researchers from the Fort Worth Zoo and contribute to the long-term conservation of this critically endangered species. Students may also select to receive three hours of academic credit through H. Lavity Stoutt Community College by enrolling in the course Applied Field Research and completing additional assignments connected to the field experience.

Science, Education, & Leadership Expeditions for Positive Change

 

  • Internship Expedition - provides free marine science and sailing programs to local children that are experiencing disadvantages and is open to all genders and majors. Interns, many of whom are college students, volunteer their time, and the position meets internship and service learning requirements.  There are four week and two week options. Here is a flyer that can be shared with students.

  • Women's Leadership Expedition - an immersive, experiential program that is centered around leadership education and stewardship with a focus on providing women the knowledge to become the optimal version of themselves as a conscious leader. Here is a flyer that can be shared with students.

NSF REU Site Crop Diversity and Rural Livelihoods in Vermont and Uganda

Call for Applications: NSF REU Site at the University of Vermont

We are now accepting applications for a Summer 2023 NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program based at the University of Vermont. This REU will provide eight American undergraduate students from diverse academic backgrounds an opportunity to conduct interdisciplinary research on the ecological, economic and cultural roles of on-farm crop diversity in rural Vermont and rural Uganda.

Under the eight-week summer REU program students will receive training at the University of Vermont (UVM) in rural development theory, social survey research methods, spatial analysis using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and written and oral communication. Working with partners in Uganda students will collect and analyze original farm, household and spatial data from smallholder farms and surrounding communities, and work closely with faculty mentors to prepare presentations and manuscripts on links between crop diversity and livelihood outcomes.

Completed applications including 2 letters of recommendation can be submitted online via (https://www.uvm.edu/cals/cdae/reu-in-uganda) and review of applications will begin on February 28th and continue until filled. The 2023 Summer REU Site program will run from approximately June 13th – August 8th, with some flexibility depending on Covid-19 travel restrictions, safety precautions, and quarantine needs. All travel costs will be covered by NSF and the summer program includes a generous stipend. All participants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents enrolled at a U.S. college or university at the time of the program (seniors graduating in Spring 2023 are not eligible).

REU applications for the Hoban lab at The Morton Arboretum

 The Morton Arboretum REU program for 2023 is accepting applications!  We have a strong program in plant science, urban ecology, informatics, genomics, ecology, pathology, the anthropocene, conservation biology, population genetics, science communication, evolution, taxonomy, natural history collections, and more.  My team has a focus on conservation genetics, biogeography, rarity, conservation biology and conservation metrics, hybridization, evolution, and computational biology.  The program is 10 weeks, pays $6,000, housing and travel are provided.  This immersive experience gives students valuable skills and networking opportunities, both within academia and outside academia, and often results in poster presentations and publications.  For example, my 2020 REU student, Kaylee Rosenberger, published a lead author paper a year after finishing, and has presented at 3 conferences, earned a GRFP, and is now attending graduate school.
