NASA EarthRISE Developers Academy Spring 2027 Paid Research Opportunities


NASA EarthRISE Developers Academy is offering 14-week, paid research opportunities this spring that are open to current students and recent graduates, as well as transitioning/early career professionals. The Developers Academy builds the next generation of science and technology leaders through an immersive, experiential model applying NASA Earth observations to real-world challenges.

For the spring 2027 term, EarthRISE Developers Academy will provide in-person opportunities at Ames Research Center (Moffett Field, CA), Goddard Space Flight Center (Greenbelt, MD), Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Pasadena, CA), Langley Research Center (Hampton, VA), and Marshall Space Flight Center (Huntsville, AL). Additionally, a limited number of projects are available for virtual participation. Through collaborative projects, professional development, and state, local, tribal, territorial, and private partnerships, the Academy equips participants with the skills to accelerate innovation and bridge Earth science with the future of space exploration.

The Developers Academy is an interdisciplinary activity, where we accept participants with experience in a variety of fields, as well as from different phases of their career. Applicants with demonstrated skills in Earth and/or environmental sciences, remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), and/or computer science are encouraged to apply. Participants will work together on teams, guided by NASA science advisors and in partnership with decision-makers, to expand their skills to use NASA science data and apply it to projects that span a variety of topics and thematic areas including Water Resources, Disasters, Agriculture, Ecological Conservation, Lunar Resources, and more.

Applicants must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to work in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment. EarthRISE Developers Academy offers hourly, paid positions with rates that are determined by education level and working location. During the term, selected participants should be able to commit to 25 – 29 hours per week, Monday – Thursday during normal business hours.

Field/Lab Assistant Position for Fall 2026

Are you interested in ecology, prairies, and/or plant sciences and have a desire to gain some research experience? The Jones Evidence-based Restoration laboratory is currently looking for 2 undergraduate students to fill paid field/laboratory assistant positions! Students working in this position can expect to work in both field and laboratory settings. Field work will include maintaining an experimental prairie site located on the NIU campus, while laboratory work will include preparing plant samples for stable isotope analysis. No experience is necessary to apply for this position, as a major goal of this position is to help prepare students for the next steps in their career path. 

You must be a currently enrolled undergraduate student at NIU to apply. The position will run through the Fall 2026 semester and will pay $15/hour for 50 hours. This position can also count towards 1credit hour of ENVS490 or BIOS495. Flood Mitigation Management Program Internship position

Flood Mitigation Program Management Intern

The Stormwater Management Commission (SMC) is seeking one full-time intern to provide administrative support for SMC Flood Mitigation Program. This is a long-term position, not to exceed 1,000 hours. Applicants are encouraged to review information on the Voluntary Floodplain Buyout Program at lakecountyil.gov/3973/Flood-Information-and-Programs prior to applying.

The intern will primarily work in the office, with limited field visits under the guidance of SMC staff and will support multiple phases of flood mitigation program implementation. Responsibilities include assisting with coordination and communication among SMC staff, homeowners, municipal partners, and other governmental entities; supporting project documentation, administrative records, and cost tracking; and assisting with property transfer activities related to voluntary floodplain buyout projects. Additional responsibilities include administrative support for bid and demolition activities, such as maintaining bid and demolition files; supporting bid development, openings, tabulations, and award documentation; assisting with asbestos abatement planning; supporting demolition scheduling, permitting, site documentation, and compliance; coordinating with Habitat for Humanity, recycling and reuse partners, and other Lake County departments to facilitate utility disconnects; and assisting with purchase requests, payment processing, and maintenance of accounting and budget balances. Other duties may be assigned in support of SMC program management and flood mitigation activities.

Successful candidates must have strong attention to detail, effective written and verbal communication skills, and intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office products, as well as the ability to work both indoors and outdoors in variable conditions and perform limited to moderately strenuous physical activity. Candidates should be graduates of a two- or four-year higher education program with coursework in environmental science, geography, urban planning, hazard or disaster (particularly flood) mitigation planning, or a related field, and have an interest in local and federal government processes. Experience with ESRI ArcGIS software is desirable but not required. A valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record are required, and while County vehicles will be provided for most field work, candidates must have their own transportation for travel to and from field sites if needed.

This is an office-based position with regular Monday through Friday work hours (for example, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.), with alternative schedules and limited remote work options available depending on assignment. The intern will work approximately 40 hours per week for up to 25 weeks, not to exceed 1,000 hours. The desired start date is flexible, and academic credit may be available pending confirmation with the candidate’s academic advisor. Science, Education, & Leadership Expeditions for Positive Change

 

  • Internship Expedition - provides free marine science and sailing programs to local children that are experiencing disadvantages and is open to all genders and majors. Interns, many of whom are college students, volunteer their time, and the position meets internship and service learning requirements.  There are four week and two week options. Here is a flyer that can be shared with students.

2026 Stormwater Coordinator Internship

The Stormwater Management Commission (SMC) is seeking 1 intern to assist our planning, GIS and stormwater coordinator staff on a variety of tasks.

The successful candidate will spend time in the office and field under the guidance of SMC staff and will be involved in several phases of SMC’s programs in support of watershed workgroups, grant inspection coordination, education and outreach, site inspections, MS4 coordinator support and GIS tasks.

Examples of office activities may include, but will not be limited to 1) Watershed Workgroup support by updating the websites, taking and organizing meeting minutes, assisting with lining up presenters and organizing panels, and helping with meeting notes, 2) coordination with other Lake County departments/divisions for educational videos and outreach opportunities 3) updating an SMC funding source spreadsheet, 4) reporting on Watershed-based Plan milestones, 5) education and outreach support by creating project factsheets, coordinating stream clean-up requests, creating an inventory of project photos, assisting with Winter Best Practice workshops and events, 6) Central Permit Facility maintenance support, 7) GIS tasks to include filling data gaps in the SMC GIS Permit database.

Examples of field activities may include but will not be limited to 1) assistance with scheduling and coordinating best management practice inspections, 2) coordinating and performing field inspections and investigating discharges under the guidance of the SMC Stormwater Coordinator 3) field inspections on various construction projects under the guidance of the SMC Regulatory Staff, 4) other assigned field tasks as needed under the guidance of SMC Planning and Regulatory staff.

2026 SMC Project Internship

The successful candidate will spend time in the office and field under the guidance of SMC staff. It is anticipated a large portion of this internship will be in the field photographing and documenting SMC projects sites. The successful candidate may also be involved in several other phases of SMC’s programs in support of GIS tasks, watershed workgroups, grant inspection coordination, education and outreach, site inspections, and MS4 coordinator support.

Paid Summer Internship, CLIP, through the The Land Conservancy of McHenry County!

 

TLC is a Non-Profit Land Trust that focuses on preserving, and restoring, privately owned land in McHenry County Illinois. TLC owns/manages almost 1,000 acres of open-to-the-public protected preserves and provides free/affordable educational programming for the greater McHenry area. I am reaching out to you to discuss recruitment for an internship program that begins May 2026.

The application period for the Conservation Leader Internship Program (CLIP) opened January 15, 2026 and closes February 15, 2026. We are looking for 2 interns to work with TLC this summer.

CLIP is a paid (or for college credit) summer internship that will provide women, underrepresented, BIPOC & LGBTQ+ students/youth with hands-on professional training in the field of conservation. Participants will gain experience in areas such as Plant identification, Land management, GIS/GPS training, Prescribed fire training, Herbicide use, Rare plant monitoring, Wildlife/Stream surveys, Sustainable farming techniques, Land preservation techniques, Field safety, Scientific research/Experimental design, Art in the natural world, Career development and Professional networking. Collectively, these skills will give each participant a strong understanding of the field of conservation and serve as a springboard for a professional career in the field of conservation.

We are looking for students/youth that are High School Juniors or Seniors and/or Freshman-Senior in college. Applicants are not required to be enrolled in a college program.

Recruiting students for LAKES NSF REU @ UW-Stout

 


The LAKES REU is funded by the National Science Foundation and the Department of Defense ASSURE program and we are currently recruiting our 10th cohort. The program aims to better understand the root causes of water pollution and develop solutions to the problem, while providing students with interdisciplinary research experience led by mentors in biology, psychology, anthropology, political science, economics, and computer science. In addition to research, students will have the opportunity to work closely with our community and governmental partners, local citizens, and policy makers. Students will present their work at the end of the summer and will get to see their research directly impact the community around them.

This summer’s session will run from June 7th to August 8th, 2026, and we are recruiting 8 students from the fields listed above or closely related fields. Housing, stipends, and funds for food will be provided to accepted students. We also provide funding for students to present their research at a national conference in the year following their summer research. Students should be available for the entire duration of the summer program and should not be working or taking classes during that time.

 Campus Sustainability Atlas Zero Waste Student Internship

Employer: NIU Campus Sustainability

About the Program:

Through a partnership with the Post-Landfill Action Network (PLAN), NIU is participating in Atlas 

Stage 3: Action Planning—a program that helps campuses develop comprehensive Zero Waste 

Action Plans (ZWAPs). Interns employed by NIU Campus Sustainability will collaborate with 

PLAN staff to advance waste-reduction initiatives across campus. Learn more about the

Position Overview:

As an Atlas Stage 3 Intern, you will work with NIU Campus Sustainability and PLAN staff to:

• Facilitate meetings with campus stakeholders (e.g. facilities, dining, student 

organizations) to identify and advance zero-waste opportunities.

• Conduct research on waste-reduction best practices and benchmark NIU’s progress 

against peer institutions.

• Help develop project proposals and ROI analyses for infrastructure, operations, and 

engagement initiatives.

• Contribute to drafting NIU’s Zero Waste Action Plan and preparing presentations for 

campus leadership.

Qualifications:

• Current NIU undergraduate or graduate student (Spring 2026).

• Strong research, writing, and organizational skills.

• Interest in sustainability, waste management, or campus operations.

• Ability to work independently and manage a flexible 5–10 hours/week schedule.

• Experience with data analysis, campus projects, or student leadership preferred.

Congressional Internships Spring 2026 - Illinois 6th District

 Hello,

We are reaching out on behalf of Congressman Sean Casten’s office to let you know about internship opportunities for both our Washington, D.C. and Lombard offices this summer. As an office representing the 6th congressional district of Illinois, we are excited about the opportunity to recruit students from Illinois colleges and universities for this program.

Legislative interns in the Washington, D.C. office will assist with day-to-day operations of the office, including answering calls from constituents, attending committee hearings and briefings, working on projects with legislative and communications staff, scheduling and leading tours of the U.S. Capitol, and assisting with constituent correspondence for our Mail Program. Interns will have the opportunity to gain insight into the legislative process, network with staff, and learn about the inner workings of a congressional office. The Washington, D.C. office is seeking interns with a strong attention to detail and a readiness to learn, who are able to work a full-time in-person schedule, Monday-Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

 

District office interns in the Lombard, IL office will assist with office operations, including answering calls from constituents, assisting caseworkers in helping constituents navigate federal agencies, performing research for our outreach and casework teams, drafting letters, and assisting with various projects. Interns will also have the opportunity to attend virtual webinars hosted by various government agencies and work with staff on district-based projects and events. The Lombard office is seeking interns who are able to work in person, either full or part-time.
