The Office of Student Engagement & Experiential Learning has a variety of programs that will help undergraduate students gain skills in leadership, academic and creative inquiry, mentoring, collaboration, and more through hands-on-learning experiences. These engaged learning experiences can help give students a competitive edge within their field! Our programs also provide students with financial relief in the forms of scholarships as well as compensation. We are currently accepting applications for the following programs and encourage you to you advise students about them:
Huskie Service Scholars program is available to incoming freshmen or first-year transfer students who enjoy engaging in weekly service activities on-campus and in the community. Students receive a $1,200 tuition waiver for active participation and successful completion of the program. For early decisions, apply by May 12th.
Research Rookies allows undergraduate first-semester freshman, sophomore and first-year transfer students to learn what research looks like in their field of study by working alongside talented faculty for 5-10 hours per week throughout the fall and spring semesters on a small-scale research project. Students receive a $500 stipend for active participation and successful completion of the program. No matter what college, department, or major, any student can apply to be a Research Rookie! Apply by July 15th.
Summer Research Opportunities Program gives NIU undergraduate students the opportunity to conduct paid, faculty-mentored, research during the summer months. Students receive a $3500 stipend and optional free on-campus housing throughout the duration of the program (June 16-August 9, 2019). Apply by March 11th.
