Description
The mission of the Division of Environmental and Water Resources is to develop, evaluate, and implement programs to protect the health, safety and welfare of our residents and the environment.  These programs include the Countywide Stormwater Management Program, the Recycling and Waste Recovery Program, Energy and Resource Conservation Programs, and other environmental activities and special projects.
Compensation: Internships are unpaid positions. The intent is to form a mutually beneficial relationship in which the intern will gain working experience in the environmental field and in public service within a local governmental position. Reference letters may be provided upon request at the end of the job term.
Schedule: It is expected that the intern will commit to a schedule of 5 – 15 hours per week, usually on the same day(s) each week, according to availability, and will communicate any potential adjustments to that schedule. Hours and tasks will be tracked jointly and a report issued to the intern at the end of the term of work.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Recycling and Resource Conservation – examples of learning opportunities
  • Gaining experience in writing articles for publication in the Kane County Connects blog and newsletter
  • Supporting staff at recycling events, for example at the 7/14/18 Recycling Extravaganza
  • Observing how to plan and deliver educational outreach, assisting with school events or presentations
  • Learning how to create contact lists, for example a list of environmental education contractors
  • Practicing data entry, for example program feedback cards, and analyzing the data
  • Designing marketing and outreach materials
  • Helping to create and administer surveys
  • Assisting with grant requests in order to learn this important skill
Water Resources – examples of learning opportunities
  • Observing how to do GIS mapping of the County's storm sewer system
  • Field data collection of storm sewer data, learning how to operate the ArcGIS Collector App
  • Assist County staff with stormwater basin inspections, gaining field experience
  • Assist County staff with field visits to resolve residential drainage problems, gaining experience
  • Practicing data entry for pre-2002 site development permits by parcel ID number
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
  • Some understanding of environmental and water resource related issues
  • Basic proficiency with computer, including MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
