IDNR accepting applications for Illinois Natural Areas Stewardship grants
SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) will accept applications through June 16, 2023, for Illinois Natural Areas Stewardship grants.
The goal of this grant program is to increase the delivery of much needed stewardship activities to natural areas protected within the Illinois Nature Preserves Commission (INPC) system. Stewardship needs throughout the state have continued to outpace the ability to deliver these services by individuals, volunteers, organizations, and government agencies. The program is designed to fund projects that immediately address this deficiency and begin to expand on the stewardship capacity of Conservation Land Trusts through grants that will expand their staff and equipment for these activities.
Stewardship activities funded by this grant program must be included in the management schedules approved by the INPC and are limited to a maximum of $100,000 per proposal. Eligible costs may include contractual services, staff time related to the project, equipment, and materials necessary to complete stewardship projects such as tools, safety items, herbicide, construction materials, and indirect costs. Benefit costs are not eligible. Matching funds are required on all projects. The minimum match requirements allowed by administrative rule are 5% or $1,000, whichever is less, to ensure that all land trusts will have access to the program.
Eligible applicants are Conservation Land Trusts exempt from taxation under Section 501(c)(3) of the federal Internal Revenue Code and whose originating documents include in its purposes the restoration and stewardship of land for conservation purposes.

Funding for this grant program is derived from a portion of the Illinois Natural Areas Acquisition Fund and must be used by the IDNR for the stewardship of natural areas, including habitats for endangered and threatened species (Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development Act, 525 ILCS 35/14).

GEER Grant Peer Academic Coaches--December 11th deadline

Peer Academic Coaches
Are you looking for a campus job but have not found one? Do your peers ask you to help them find resources on campus? This opportunity is for you. Apply to become a Peer Academic Coach (PAC). A PAC is an undergraduate student who has been academically successful at Northern Illinois University. Peer Academic Coaches share student-to-student NIU-specific tips, host academic success workshops, and provide general academic support in a safe environment.
Strong candidates must have a proven record of academic success and be committed to providing guidance and support to your fellow peers. The Fund It Forward Student Video Challenge
This is an opportunity to tell the brief story about the importance of scientific research and a chance to win cash prices up to $1,000 with your graduate and undergraduate students (they have separate category for each).
The Science Coalition (TSC), a nonprofit, nonpartisan group of more than 50 research universities (NIU is one of them), is hosting a video challenge for students to tell their stories!
TSC is dedicated to growing America’s investment in fundamental science, but we cannot take support for research funding for granted. At a time of competing priorities, it is important that Congress hear why robust federal support for research is critical for our future.
See attached details and the link for students to learn more about specifications. These are 60 – 90 second videos detailing why scientific research matters for our future. Deadline is October 21st.

The Science
Coalition is excited to launch its Fund It Forward Student Video Challenge this
fall. In preparation for the kickoff, the Student Engagement Committee has
prepared materials for you to help amplify the challenge.
The Student Video Challenge page on the TSC website is now live,
incorporating all the information interested students may need. Submissions
will be accepted from September 3 – October 21, 2019. This event is open to graduate and
undergraduate students at TSC institutions. Cash prizes will be awarded to the
top three graduate and undergraduate winners. There is also a people’s choice
award for the finalists.
We are also attaching an informational graphic that has the
details about this activity. We are asking you to share this information
with you campus communication offices, student life offices, and relevant STEM
programs.

On/Off-Campus Employment:
Human Resource Services: On-Campus Student Jobs
Description: A job position posted by a member of departmental faculty or staff, and is paid by that department. These positions are available to students regardless of their financial aid status, but require these following common employment information documents.
Housing and Residential Services
Description: NIU Housing and Residential Services provides student employment in one of the many residence halls throughout campus, and aims to build student relationships and keep residence halls clean and managed efficiently.
Campus Dining Services
Description: Servicing customers of the NIU dining halls and food service locations across campus. Students will be involved in food preparation, dish washing and cleaning. Students must be in good standing with Office of Community Standards and Student Conduct
Government Aid: Federal Work-Study
Description: Work-study is a federal program that allows students to be hired either on or off-campus through employers that are eligible. Students can then earn an amount notified by an award on MyNIU Student Center. Eligibility is determined by financial information given by prospective students on their FAFSA.
Huskies Get Hired
Description: Huskies Get Hired is an online platform that allows students to connect with prospective employers for either part-time jobs, career opportunities, and internships. The platform also allows students to upload their resumes online, view information about the employment market, and access career advice from the National Association of Colleges and Employers.
Funded Research Opportunities:
Student Engagement Fund (SEF)
Description: The Student Engagement Fund is a program that provides funds for students to get involved in a variety of research opportunities. There are four different funding opportunities: mentored student research projects, mentored community-based research projects, NIU faculty-led study abroad and field schools, and travel expenses for faculty-led or group trips.

Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP)
Description: This NIU program allows students to find funding for faculty-mentored research projects during the summer. SROP will require that students work 40+ hours/week, get involved in supplemental activities, and present their research at the Summer Research Symposium.
Research, Engagement and Academic Diversity (READ) Grant
Description: The READ Grant provides funding to students and faculty that want to pursue research projects related to social justice and diversity. There are also opportunities for social involvement and entrepreneurship projects with a focus on social issues.
Undergraduate Special Opportunities in Artistry and Research Program (USOAR)
Description: USOAR funds student-generated research projects under the direct supervision and mentoring of a faculty member. Students of any major will be eligible to apply, and will be provided with $2,500 to carry out their research project.
Research Rookies
Description: This programs allows first year, second year, or first-semester transfer students to conduct small-scale research projects algonside faculty members. Students from any major or minor may apply, but will be required to fulfill the following: commit to 5-10 hours per week, committed to participate for two consecutive semesters, 2.75 GPA.
Federal Grants:
Federal Pell Grant
Description: This grant is awarded to students with extreme need for financial assistance. Eligibility is determined by students’ FAFSA information and the award amount ranges from $606 and $5,920 depending on the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) for that FAFSA. Unlike federal loans, the Pell Grant does not need to be repaid. The grant is also based upon full-time enrollment and will be reduced for part-time enrollment.
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity (FSEOG) Grant
Description: This grant is available to students that are enrolled for at least 9 credit-hours and have not yet completed a bachelor's degree. The award amount varies and is determined by financial need as shown by the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) on a student’s FAFSA. Priority is given to those students that have low EFCs and have also been awarded the Federal Pell Grant.
Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant
Description: This grant provides $4,000 a year to junior and senior undergraduate students that agree to serve for at least four years in a high needs teaching program in eligible private or public elementary schools. Students must have a 3.25+ GPA, maintaining that GPA throughout the program. Students must also complete TEACH Grant counselling, sign a TEACH Grant agreement, and enroll in a teacher education certificate program in one of the following areas: Bilingual Education, Foreign Language, Mathematics, Reading Specialist, Science, or Special Education.
Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant
Description: This grant is awarded to students that had a parent die due to military service in either Iraq or Afghanistan. The maximum amount to be awarded is $5,920, but the award cannot exceed the cost of attendance for that year.
State of Illinois Grants:
Monetary Award Program (MAP) Grant
Description: The MAP Grant is a need-based financial assistance grant that is available to undergraduate students who have not yet completed a bachelor’s degree. In order to qualify, students and their parents must be Illinois residents. Students can be awarded between $300 and $4,720 and must be enrolled in at least 15 credit-hours to maintain the grant.
Grant Program for Dependents of Police or Fire Officers
Description: This grant is available to students that are the spouse or child of a police/fire office that has either been killed or 90% disabled during active duty. Recipients of this grant will receive full payment of tuition and mandatory fees associated with enrollment. To maintain eligibility for this grant, students must be enrolled at least half-time.
Grant Program for Dependents of Correctional Officers
Description: This grant is available to students that are the spouse or child of an Illinois Department of Corrections officer that has either been killed or 90% disabled during active duty. Recipients of this grant will receive full payment of tuition and mandatory fees associated with enrollment. To maintain eligibility for this grant, students must be enrolled at least half-time.
Minority Teachers of Illinois
Description: Students may apply for this $5,000 scholarship award if they are a minority student (African American/Black, Hispanic American, Asian American, or of Native American origin) and are enrolled to earn a degree in preschool, elementary, or secondary school education. In order to be eligible, students must be enrolled at least half-time, and have a GPA of 2.5 or higher.
Illinois Special Education Teacher Tuition Waiver (SETTW) Program
Description: This program awards tuition waivers to academically talented students that are pursuing a degree in special education. The program will exempt eligible students from paying tuition and mandatory fees for up to four years, but students must sign a Teaching Agreement./Master Promissory Note that states they will pursue a career in special education in Illinois. If they are found to not be pursuing this path, the waiver will become a loan that needs to be paid back.
Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois
Description: This program awards scholarships to first and second-year college students that show academic talent and are pursuing careers teaching in high-need schools across Illinois. Award recipients can receive up to $23,000 in tuition and fee assistance and will be placed in a paid summer internship. To be eligible students must have ACT scores of 22 or higher (with a 6 minimum for writing), have passed the Test of Academic Proficiency (TAP) prior to January 2019, and have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.
MIA/POW Scholarship
Description: This scholarship is awarded to students that are the dependent of a person who was a resident of Illinois at the time they entered active military duty, and have been declared to be a prisoner of war, missing in action, dead as a result of service-inflicted disability, or disabled with 100% disability as a result of military service (which must be recognized by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs or U.S. Department of Defense).
NIU Grants:
Huskie Advantage Grant
Description: This is an NIU-funded program that can be awarded to first-year freshman students that are enrolled full-time. The award amount is determined by the student’s Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and academic credentials.
Huskie Advantage Grant 2:
Description: This is an NIU-funded program that can be awarded to transfer and current NIU undergraduate students that have attended less than two years in college and are enrolled full-time enrolled full-time. The award amount is determined by the student’s Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and academic credentials.
