2023 Sustainable Food Systems Innovation
Challenge
Northern Illinois University and the Office of Innovation
are hosting a Sustainable Food Systems innovation challenge on November 11th
and 12th this year with a focus on food Justice.
The goal is for college students from around the Midwest to compete
in teams that work towards creating viable solutions for the challenge problem
statement. These will be students with passion and initiative who want to help
make a difference in the world and are interested in food systems and the
problems faced therein!
The 24-hour Challenge pushes teams of students to use their
multidisciplinary skills to create solutions to pressing sustainable food
systems problems worldwide.
Students of all skill levels are welcome to participate in
the event, which will be held at the Holmes Student Center. There is no charge
for the challenge entry, and participants will be provided with meals, drinks,
snacks, T-shirts, mentorship and relaxation time.
NIU's 2023 Sustainable Food Systems Innovation Challenge

service learning course explore philosophical, ethical, and environmental
issues surrounding food and food production. It addresses questions such as the
following:
· What should we do to reduce food insecurity and hunger?
· Do our food choices play a role in the oppression of others?
· Are there good foods and bad foods? Or are all foods okay in
moderation?
· How do we know that our food is safe? What can we do to make
it safer?
· How can we lessen the climate impact of current agricultural
practice?
· How can we, as consumers, seek out sustainably produced
food?
The
course has no prerequisites and counts as an elective for the Certificate
of Undergraduate Study in Applied Ethics.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Coordinates all onsite activities at client location or locations in relation
to the storage, transportation and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous
wastes and other related services following Federal, state and local
regulations. Supervises and plans activities of onsite personnel. Serves as
liaison between client and vendors in relation to service issues. Maintains
pre-established standards for safety and environmental compliance.
TYPICAL DUTIES INCLUDE:

Comply
with MPS Group s management system policies and procedures
·
Manage
client and vendor financial obligations including invoicing, reporting, record
keeping and contract management
·
Coordinate
logistics for transportation of hazardous waste, universal waste and
non-hazardous waste from client site including characterizing, profiling,
scheduling, manifesting and physically loading waste (bulk and drummed)
·
Promote
culture of safety by ensuring site personnel are properly trained to perform
assigned duties and comply with safety, environmental, Federal, state and local
regulations
·
Proactively
work with client to establish reuse, reduction, and recycling options that aid
in achieving waste targets
·
Track
production, waste and budget variances and routinely communicate status with
client and Regional Manager
·
Read
and interpret analytical data used to characterize waste streams
·
Identify
out of scope and episodic projects, work with your Regional Manager and client
to quote project and profile material prior to providing service
·
Maintain
environmental compliance by conducting regulatory and client specific
inspections and audits applicable to the facility
·
Manage
the contract per current budget and seek internal/external cost savings
·
Supervise
personnel necessary to fulfill requirements of contract
·
Complete
all other assignments made by MPS management and client
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
·
Bachelor
s degree (B.S.) in engineering or related science field, or minimum of six
years related experience
·
Positive
customer service skills
·
Previous
experience in the hazardous and solid waste industry
·
Proficient
in Microsoft Office applications
·
Must
be able to pass appropriate drug test and background check
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
·
RCRA,
DOT Hazmat, Hazwoper 40-hour training
·
Certified
Hazardous Material Manager (CHMM); desired not mandatory
·
SPCC
Storm water operator; desired not mandatory
·
Operator
license (Driver License) to operate on-site vehicles
·
Forklift
Certification (in locations where applicable)
·
Other
Training: may be required based on client or local/regional requirements
