Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program - University of California Santa Cruz

Applications for the Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program (conservationscholars.ucsc.eduat the University of California Santa Cruz are now available. Each March we select 20 early-undergraduate Scholars from around the country to participate in a two-year conservation mentorship program centered on the summers between academic years. Our goal is to serve students from groups traditionally underrepresented in conservation, across disciplines, who can contribute to diversifying, redefining, and strengthening efforts to protect land, wildlife and water.  We focus our efforts on serving college freshmen, sophomores, and juniors with two years of college left at a stage when we can support their undergraduate careers and their choices as they graduate.  Students who attend or are transferring to any four-year institution in the US, its territories and Native nations are eligible.  US citizens, permanent residents, DACA and Dreamer students are eligible to apply. International students are not eligible for the program.

During the first year Scholars participate in an eight-week, intensive summer course integrating conservation design, leadership and research experiences while traveling with a close group of peers and mentors. During the second summer, Scholars pursue eight-week research and practice internships with nationally recognized conservation organizations and agencies.  A professional development retreat after the second summer brings together the Scholar cohort and prepares them to apply for jobs and graduate school. Throughout the two years and beyond, we work with home mentors at each Scholar’s campus to provide ongoing support. Scholars receive travel and lodging support and a $4,000 stipend each summer and become part of the national Doris Duke Conservation Scholars network for life.

LAKES Research Opportunity at University of Wisconsin-Stout


The LAKES (Linking Applied Knowledge in Environmental Sustainability) REU focuses on water quality and phosphorus mitigation in an interdisciplinary manner over an 8 week program (June 9-August 4), with projects in economics, biology, geography, and political science.  Students will be provided with room and board and a generous stipend during their participation in the LAKES program.

Undergraduate Natural Science Internship

Research and Extension Experiential Learning for Undergraduates (REEU) – Diversity in Faces, Spaces and Places of Natural Resources Sciences program via Purdue University's Department of Forestry and Natural Resources

This REEU program is an eight-week, field-based, natural resource science-focused, summer internship program, funded by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture. This program provides opportunities for participating undergraduate students to address research questions related to the biodiversity of ecosystems within a highly agricultural landscape, and to develop technical, critical thinking and mentoring skills. Participating undergraduate students will be paired with graduate student and faculty mentors and high school interns to address research questions in their area of interest (e.g., stream ecosystem health, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, birds, herbaceous plants, and trees). Weekly mentoring, social events and professional activities are included.  Selected applicants will receive a financial incentive package, including a $4,000 stipend, meals and housing, and travel reimbursement (up to $500).

Graduate and PhD Student Fellowships - University of Delaware



We are pleased to invite applications for graduate student fellowship in wind energy and the storage of intermittent renewables at the University of Delaware. Delaware houses a leading wind power research program with emphasis on the burgeoning offshore market. Twelve-month stipends are approximately $28,000 for Ph.D. students and slightly less for Master’s students.

We are particularly interested in fellows whose research interests are in one of the following topics:

  1. environmental risk assessment
  2. geological and geotechnical aspects of wind projects
  3. grid integration
  4. marine logistics, including deployment and installation
  5. remote sensing for offshore wind power site characterization
  6. socio-economic and cultural dimensions of wind power
  7. spatial planning
  8. wind meteorology, resource assessment and wind turbine wakes

Fellows will be advised by a faculty member whose principal appointment is in Marine Policy (MP), Physical Ocean Science and Engineering (POSE), Oceanography, Geography or Geological Sciences, depending on interest and research interest match.

Each fellow is required to be admitted to the master’s or PhD program in MP, POSE, Geological Sciences, Geography or Climatology (PhD only).   You must apply and be accepted as a graduate student to be eligible for the fellowship.

PhD and MS Degrees at University of Delaware - Department of Geography

The Geospatial Data Science Cluster at the University of Delaware’s Department of Geography

We have a growing faculty in Geospatial Data Science specialized in GIScience, Remote Sensing, Machine Learning, Big Data Analytics and Modeling, with applications in Land Change Science, Human Dimensions of Climate Change, Sustainability, and Climatology. experience in geography and environmental science is a plus.

GEOG 490/690: Community Geography

Community Geography (GEOG 490/690) is our service learning course where students will work with the instructor in the development and execution of an applied research project in service to a local community agency. This spring, the research project will be for the DeKalb County Economic Development Corporation and will incorporate perception, place making, and place utilization in the campus area in support of planning for the recently approved Northern Illinois Center for Community Sustainability. 

This course also contributes to the undergraduate GIS and Graduate GIA Certificate programs, and pre-requites can be waived with instructor approval.

Graduate Research Opportunities

Our research group, led by Dr. Peleg Kremer and Dr. Kabindra Shakya at the department of Geography & the Environment at Villanova University, is recruiting graduate students at the Masters level interested in studying fine scale spatial patterns in urban air pollution and the relationship between urban structure and ecosystem services. 
Our project, briefly outlined here, is supported by the NSF GSS program. Accepted students will pursue an MS degree in Environmental Science and design thesis projects aligned with project parameters. Full funding and travel allowances are available. Additional competitive funding opportunities exist within the department. Background in environmental science and/or GIS and remote sensing are highly desirable.

Madagascar Study Abroad - June 7-July 7 2019


Topics include (1) goals and methods of studying primates in the wild, (2) Madagascar's evolutionary history and recent extinctions, including lab work at the University of Antananarivo and (3) current conservation threats. The course is largely experiential, with an independent project (on either extant fauna or recently extinct lemurs) dominating the students' time in the field. Whereas our main focus is primates (specifically lemurs, extinct and extant), students interested in studying other elements of the ecosystem are welcome.
