JOB DESCRIPTION
Field technicians (8-10 possible) are needed to conduct applied research in the area of aquatic ecology and large river systems throughout the state of Illinois. Technicians will assist large river ecologists in the collection of standardized long-term river monitoring data with additional targeted data collection. This position will be 40 hours per week and will be located in Havana, Illinois.
QUALIFICATIONS
Must have or be in the process of working toward a bachelor degree in aquatic ecology, biology, zoology or a biological related field. Must demonstrate a working knowledge of, and ability to collect, biological data such as fisheries and water quality in a large river system. Understanding and experience with standardized long-term monitoring sampling protocols is preferred. Experience using large boats, outboard motors, trailers, four-wheel drive vehicles and maintaining field equipment is also preferred. Candidate will participate in boat electrofishing, netting and other appropriate gear types as well as be expected to perform field station maintenance duties when needed. This position requires significant physical exertion (including carrying 50 or more pounds of gear), commitment to safety, and meticulous data recording. The individual must have a valid driver’s license and a strong ability to swim. Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions, long days with possible nights and weekends.
Salary: $12.00 - $14.00 per hour, depending on experience
Available: June 1 – October 31, 2022 with potential extension to December 2022 and beyond. Starting date can be adjusted slightly depending on candidate’s availability.

This position will be 40 hours per week and will be based in Macomb, Illinois.

Must have or be in the process of working toward a bachelor’s degree in aquatic ecology, biology, zoology or a biological related field. Must demonstrate a working knowledge of, and ability to collect, biological data such as fisheries and water quality in a large river system. Understanding and experience with standardized long-term monitoring sampling protocols is preferred. Experience using large boats, outboard motors, trailers, four-wheel drive vehicles and maintaining field equipment is also preferred. Candidate will participate in native and invasive fish monitoring, netting, and other appropriate sampling methods, as well as be expected to perform other field, laboratory, and station maintenance duties when needed. This position requires significant physical exertion (including carrying 50 or more pounds of gear), commitment to safety, and meticulous data recording. The individual must have a valid driver’s license and a strong ability to swim. Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions, long days, occasional nights, and possible weekends.

Thursday, Feb 10 at 3:30p on Zoom (link below) Dr. Becca Barnes of Colorado College will give her talk entitled "Reimagining STEM to make it more inclusive and welcoming." I think folks in your department will be interested in this because Dr. Barnes is a biogeochemist and ecosystem ecologist who is interested in understanding how aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems process and export nitrogen and carbon. She is particularly interested in understanding how disturbance and global change drivers (e.g. nitrogen deposition, land use change, and warming) affect ecosystem function. Her work overlaps with many graduate students in our and other (Geology) departments and will be of broad interests. She’s also in the leadership of 500 Women Scientists, which she’ll talk about as well.
