My name is Jessica Eisma, and I am an assistant professor of water resources engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington. I am the PI for an NSF CyberTraining grant that holds an online bootcamp for undergraduate students interested in water and energy research. The bootcamp teaches the basics of Python programming (analytics and visualization), FAIR data principles, and machine learning within a justice in data theme (flyer attached). Our goal is to teach undergraduate students how to find, access, and work with data such that their data can be reused by other researchers. We are looking for applicants that have active research experience or a summer research experience lined up. As the PI of an NSF REU site, you may be interested in offering this additional training and fellowship opportunity to your active/incoming undergraduate research students.
The bootcamp will be held through Microsoft Teams during the weeks of May 20-31 and will be FREE for all participants. UTA professors in civil engineering and computer science will deliver the content, which includes many examples and hands-on activities. The students will have the opportunity to participate in a mentoring relationship over the summer, ending with an online research symposium. All students affiliated with US universities who complete the program will earn a Justice in Data Fellowship award of at least $400. More details are available on our website: https://seusi-lab.uta.edu/research/justice-in-data/.
Please share with students and faculty who may be interested. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions.
Best,
Jessica
