Volunteer & Job openings at San Jose State University

San Jose State University is seeking applications for an opening for a Non-SJSU Affiliated Community Member for the Institutional Biosafety Committee. This volunteer position is open to anyone with expertise in biosafety-related matters. I hope you will share this opportunity with your network and encourage early career professionals or postdocs to apply.

Benefits to volunteers:

  • Exposure to a wide variety of research topics: The SJSU biological research profile is quite varied so we encourage people with experience working with human, plant, viral, bacterial, fungal, or animal tissues to apply. Some examples of our research include: nursing, biomedical engineering, a major marine lab, entomology, and immunology.
  • As a primarily teaching institution, almost half of the applications we review are for lab and field classes. This could be a great opportunity to get ideas for your own classes.
  • Safety compliance experience looks great on a resume! This is a great way to learn more about how to safely conduct your science.

Expectations:

  • Virtually attend one monthly meeting with the SJSU Institutional Biosafety Committee (about 1 h).
  • Review about 2 Biological Use Authorization Applications per month. Usually you would be the primary reviewer for only one application per month. Total time would be up to 1 hour per application as primary reviewer. Reviewer assignments are flexible to committee volunteer's capacity at any given time.
  • Represent the interests of the community outside of SJSU with respect to health and protection of the environment. You don't have to be an expert in all biosafety topics!
  • Non-affiliated community members must reside within 100 miles of San Jose State University and/or Moss Landing Marine Laboratories. The addresses are:
    • 1 Washington Sq, San Jose, CA 95192
    • 8272 Moss Landing Rd, Moss Landing, CA 95039

To apply:

Using this APPLICATION LINK to submit your application. The survey will be closed once the position is filled. You will need to upload the following:
