Scholarships Deadline Approaching

AcademicWorks Common Application Scholarships Deadline is January 31st, 2018. This includes some CSWGS Scholarships.

Mothers Memorial Scholarship
This is open to all upper level undergraduate students and also graduate students whose career goals include improving the lives of women.

Austin Sawicki Memorial Scholarship 
This is open to undergraduate and graduate students who have made major contributions to the lives of women and LGBT people at NIU.

CSWGS Student Research & Artistry Symposium
NIU's Center for the Study of Women Gender and Sexuality is accepting submissions for the 2018 CSWGS Research and Artistry Student Symposium –Deadline is Monday, March 19, 2018.  Undergraduate and graduate students at NIU are invited to participate.

This year's symposium will be held Friday, April 20, 2018 in Altgeld 315 from 9am-2pm. They are accepting submissions that address a broad range of topics related to Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies, including submissions that focus on:


  • the contributions and status of women and LGBTQ+ people
  • understandings of love and sexuality in relationships
  • the dynamics of sex roles and gender ideals, past and present
  • the impact of race, ethnicity, age, social class, sexual orientation, ability, and other factors on women's experiences and the experiences of LGBTQ+ people
  • and other issues relating to women, gender and/or sexuality 

Other Opportunities 

Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP)This program gives NIU undergraduate students the opportunity to conduct paid, faculty-mentored research during the summer months. Participating in SROP allows students to connect with faculty mentors and apply classroom learning to the lab or the field. Open to all majors. Applications due March 11, 2018. Call for Papers - the First Graduate Conference in Qualitative Inquiry at NIUThe newly Qualitative Inquiry Collaborative (QUIV) at NIU will host the  1st Annual Graduate Conference in Qualitative Inquiry at the Barsema Alumni and Visitors Center on Saturday, April 7, 2018. To support the rigorous development of qualitative inquiry in the social sciences, this daylong conference will provide NIU graduate students with the opportunity to present their own original qualitative research. Presenters within individual sessions will come from a range of social science disciplines and will be linked by their methodological or conceptual approaches. Faculty discussants will be assigned to each session to further explore methodological issues in qualitative inquiry. Abstracts must be submitted to the QUIC by 5pm on January 31, 2018. Please submit proposals electronically to QUIC@niu.edu. Presenters will receive an acceptance email by March 1, 2018. For more information on the conference, or on proposal requirements, please contact QUIC@niu.edu.
