Description
The mission of the Division of Environmental and Water Resources is to develop, evaluate, and implement programs to protect the health, safety and welfare of our residents and the environment.  These programs include the Countywide Stormwater Management Program, the Recycling and Waste Recovery Program, Energy and Resource Conservation Programs, and other environmental activities and special projects.
Compensation: Internships are unpaid positions. The intent is to form a mutually beneficial relationship in which the intern will gain working experience in the environmental field and in public service within a local governmental position. Reference letters may be provided upon request at the end of the job term.
Schedule: It is expected that the intern will commit to a schedule of 5 – 15 hours per week, usually on the same day(s) each week, according to availability, and will communicate any potential adjustments to that schedule. Hours and tasks will be tracked jointly and a report issued to the intern at the end of the term of work.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Recycling and Resource Conservation – examples of learning opportunities
  • Gaining experience in writing articles for publication in the Kane County Connects blog and newsletter
  • Supporting staff at recycling events, for example at the 7/14/18 Recycling Extravaganza
  • Observing how to plan and deliver educational outreach, assisting with school events or presentations
  • Learning how to create contact lists, for example a list of environmental education contractors
  • Practicing data entry, for example program feedback cards, and analyzing the data
  • Designing marketing and outreach materials
  • Helping to create and administer surveys
  • Assisting with grant requests in order to learn this important skill
Water Resources – examples of learning opportunities
  • Observing how to do GIS mapping of the County's storm sewer system
  • Field data collection of storm sewer data, learning how to operate the ArcGIS Collector App
  • Assist County staff with stormwater basin inspections, gaining field experience
  • Assist County staff with field visits to resolve residential drainage problems, gaining experience
  • Practicing data entry for pre-2002 site development permits by parcel ID number
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
  • Some understanding of environmental and water resource related issues
  • Basic proficiency with computer, including MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

All films at the Egyptian Theater, 7:00 p.m.  Free of charge.  Guest speakers/discussants will be available after showings.
Sept. 13  “A Plastic Ocean”  (2016, dir. Craig Leeson, 102 min.) An international team of adventurers, researchers and Ocean ambassadors go on a mission around the globe to uncover the shocking truth about what is truly lurking beneath the surface of our seemingly pristine ocean.
Sept. 20 “From the Ashes” (2017, dir. Michael Bonfiglio, 90 min.) An exploration of the communities on the front line of “the war on coal” from Appalachia to the Powder River Basin.  What is at stake for our economy, health and climate?
Sept. 27 “Company Town” (2017, dir.  Natalie Kottke and Erica Sardaria, 90 min.) One man, David Bouie, heroically attempts to find out what is poisoning his small Arkansas town.  He runs up against Koch industries.
Oct. 4  “Chasing Coral” (2017, dir. Jeff Orlowski, 93 min.)  A team of oceanographers and filmmakers sets out to capture what is happening to the Great Barrier Reef.  The destruction of these formerly pristine coral reefs is devastating.
Oct 11  “RBG” (2018, dir. Julie Cohen, Betsy West, 93 min.) A look at the life and work of the extraordinary 84-year old Ruth Bader Ginsberg.  Her work on the Supreme Court is related by the people who know her best.

Electric Vehicle Display

Celebrate the beginning of the transition to renewable energy with a Display of Electric Vehicles, music by Dave Kolars, and speakers. This free event will be held Monday, June 25 from 4:00 to 6:15 at Hallgren Park in DeKalb. The Display of Electric Vehicles will include Electric Bicycles, a Chevy Bolt, a Nissan Leaf, an Electric Motorcycle, and a lithium battery powered commercial Riding Lawnmower.
This event demonstrates how the combined strength and imagination of local leaders, the success and growth of the market economy, and governmental polices will make the needed transition from fossil fuels to renewable fuels.
Our Speakers will be local leaders in politics, business, and social action. DeKalb Mayor Jerry Smith will welcome us at 4:30 with a statement about renewable energy sources. Andre Williams will speak on the transition to renewable energy that is necessitated by climate change. Mike Paul from North Central Cyclery in DeKalb will introduce us to electric bicycles. Nancy Proesel will advocate for keeping social justice front and center reminding us how too often communities least able to adjust lose the most and suffer the most when any change occurs. Sara Dady will discuss what our Federal Legislators should do to further the transition.
Musician Dave Kolars will be performing at the beginning from 4:00 PM to 4:30 and at the end (6:00 to 6:15) of this Celebration. People should feel free to bring a chair or blanket and to contact us if they have questions at 350Kishwaukee@gmail.com
Hallgren Park is located at 701 Franklin Street. This event will be held between the Gazebo and Franklin Street. It is organized by 350Kishwaukee, a group of people residing in the Kishwaukee River Watershed who provide education and advocacy on renewable energy.

Description of Work Unit: Housing & Dining Services (HDS) is a multifaceted auxiliary organization responsible for management of on-campus housing facilities, residential dining, conferences, and the CSU Mountain Campus. Approximately 450 full-time staff and 1,700 hourly and student staff serve the nearly 8,000 students who live on campus, in addition to other campus and community guests. This includes coordination of a student peer education program, composting and waste reduction programs, sustainable dining programs, student sustainability gardens, the on-campus grown greens partnership, staff training, and sustainability reporting and assessment. A key component of this position is project management and engagement. This position will require innovative thinking and the ability to work independently as well as within cross-functional teams. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Sustainability for Housing & Dining Services.

Required Job Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Sustainability, Environmental Science or Studies, Natural Resources OR a closely related field with a minimum of two years of experience in sustainability OR a bachelor’s degree in an unrelated field with four years of experience in sustainability
• Demonstrated experience working with people from different backgrounds (e.g. race, culture, gender, etc.)

Preferred Job Qualifications:
• Experience with project management software or systems
• Experience in higher education
• Experience managing student staff or interns
• Master’s degree in sustainability-related field
• Experience with content management software
• Experience with public speaking and engagement
• Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
