Job Description
The Environmental Intern will provide support to the Public Works Environmental Services Division in a wide variety of civil and municipal environmental related functions including planning, designing, administration, and inspection of environmental and maintenance projects.  Work may involve assisting the staff with review and interpretation of construction plans and specification, cost estimates, utility investigation, contractor coordination, measuring quantities, sewer and water investigations, preparing reports, research, field data collection and other related tasks.  Assist with projects that involve working on water mains, sanitary sewers, refuse, water and wastewater improvement projects.  Conduct general office work, such as scanning and filing.

Requirements
Applicants must be a full-time college student earning a degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Environmental Engineering or a similar field and enrolled in school full-time for the fall of 2017.  Upon selection, verification through the student’s academic advisor will be required.  Applicants must possess a valid Illinois Driver’s License.

The successful candidate shall have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, strong customer service skills, effective oral and written communication skills, and knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.  Working knowledge of basic environmental practices, including chemistry and higher mathematics used in the environmental field is preferred. The ability to draft communications and to prepare and interpret engineering plans, specifications, EPA rules and standards, along with GIS methods is preferred.  Knowledge of general office skills and the ability to organize information is also important.  Position requires working both indoors and outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions, and extensive walking.

Additional information
Candidate must be willing to commit to working from mid-May to mid-August 2017, with the option for some additional winter (break time) work as approved by the City.  This position will work 40 hours per week, Monday thru Friday.  Employment is contingent upon passing a background check and drug screen.

Salary
This position pays $12.00 per hour with a $1.00 an hour increase after each year of service.
