BCCD- Restoration Tuesdays
The BCCD Natural Resource Management Department is looking for a few more hard working volunteers to join with other hard working volunteers every Tuesday morning to help with habitat resto-ration projects. BCCD- Avid Birders Sought for Surveying
BCCD is in search of avid birders to assist staff in conducting surveys in our conservation areas! You do not have to be an expert; if you have particular interest and knowledge in bird identification, we’d be happy to have you accompany staff in the field for an informal hike through high quality sites and project areas. DeKalb County Community Garden (DCCG)
DCCG - Five Points Food Forest
The Five Points Food Forest is located at Where Five Points and Old State Roads meet just north of Route 64, north of DeKalb. It is located on a dead end road there off of Five Points before you get to Old State. It is five acres. We are planting perennials such as raspberries, hops, asparagus, fruit and nut trees, etc. We will also be working with the DeKalb Forest Preserve District to establish a small prairie there as well. We also have a volunteer beekeeper there who leads bee-keeping workshops and we have one or two hives going there.

DCCG – Walnut Grove Prairie
DCCG has a farm located at 33600 Pearl Street just a 1.4 miles north of Kirkland. It is just about equal distance from Rockford as it is from DeKalb. It is actually very close to Belvidere. It is on Pearl Street which connects Route 72 and Cherry Valley Roads. The farm has two greenhouses, a germination room, packing shed, a one-acre garden, small orchard, and a 10-acre section where we are restoring an Oak Savannah Prairie. On the farm starting April 26, we sell bedding vegetable and flower plants, and then later we will have u-pick vegetables. In regards to the MN we have a volunteer prairie steward who has had years of experience out at Nachusa. He holds regular volunteer workdays every Tuesday from 9am to noon. The volunteers will be helping with getting rid of invasive plants, seeding and planting prairie plant plugs, other prairie and natural habitat restoration work.

Land Steward Job with the Ice Age Trail Alliance

Location: Cross Plains, WI

Principal Duties and Responsibilities: Working side-by-side with experienced Alliance staff and volunteers, successful applicants will assist with or lead the Alliance’s property monitoring and land management efforts. Specifically, the successful applicant will manage the Alliance’s LANDSCAPE land conservation software, communicate with landowners and volunteer monitors, mark property boundaries, write management plans, perform tasks within these plans, control invasive species, and assist with grant development and reporting. Successful applicants will be expected to lead youth and adult volunteer groups in stewardship activities including vegetative restoration and trail maintenance.

Start date: June 2019

Successful applicant must:
  • Have a Bachelor’s Degree in biology, natural resources, land use management, forestry or other related field or related professional experience
  • Be able to perform heavy lifting of weights up to 60 pounds
  • The ability to work in extreme environmental conditions, including excessive heat and cold, biting and stinging insects, and steep terrain
  • Have a current and valid driver’s license

Job Summary

The Stewardship Ecologist I is responsible for the oversight of the day-to-day operations of the volunteer stewardship, volunteer monitoring and native seed nursery operations. Responsible for the native seed program by growing/collecting native species, processing and storing seed, and the operation of the native seed nursery and greenhouse. Coordinates native seed collection, processing and dispersal to support department projects. Assists in volunteer program development, recruiting, development of training programs and materials, and mentors volunteers and support staff.    Work schedule includes evening and weekend hours. Drives a motorized vehicle to travel to different locations.  Performs tasks that will require walking, bending, stooping, standing, kneeling, climbing, reaching and sitting.  Performs lifting tasks up to 50 pounds.

Experience

Qualifications -
Completion of Bachelor’s Degree with emphasis in environmental science, botany, resource management or related field.  Two years’ experience in native plant propagation, greenhouse operations and operation of a seed nursery and experience in volunteer programs and recruitment and natural areas management and monitoring.  Knowledge of flora and fauna of northeastern Illinois, with particular emphasis in invasive and native plant species. Ability to identify species of native plants for accurate seed collection. Knowledge of standard methods, materials, tools and equipment used in natural areas management and restoration. Some knowledge of standard plant and animal monitoring methods. Willingness to regularly work on weekends to facilitate volunteers.  Must possess a valid driver’s license.  Ability to obtain an Illinois Public Applicator’s License within first 6 months of employment.  Ability to obtain certificates in National Wildfire Coordinating Group wildland fire trainings I-100, S-130 & S-190.
