Job Description: One or more wildlife technician positions are available to assist the Lake
County Forest Preserve District with its Blanding’s Turtle Recovery Program from May
through July 2017 (approximate dates). Technicians will capture Blanding's Turtles
using baited hoop traps and track movements via radio-telemetry. Technicians will
also assist with the collection of eggs, the care for headstarted juvenile turtles and the
documentation of nesting activities at night. Training and all equipment will be provided
for all internship activities.
Qualifications: Ideal candidates will be comfortable working long hours often wading in marshes with little shade and may be exposed to biting insects, ticks, and poison ivy.
Additional requirements include:
• B.S. in biology, natural resources, environmental studies or related field OR degree in progress with relevant course work
• Valid driver’s license
• Familiarity or ability to learn regional aquatic species (reptiles, fish, crayfish) and ability to safely handle large and potentially aggressive animals (e.g. snapping turtles)
• Willingness to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions across difficult terrain
• Flexible work schedule including the ability to work at night during nesting season (June)
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Ability to communicate effectively with forest preserve agency personnel and the public regarding project details
• Adherence to safety and animal handling protocols
• Physical strength, stamina, and endurance sufficient for full days of strenuous field work
Essential Job functions:
• Trapping, handling, identifying and collecting data on reptiles (primarily turtles).
• Tracking turtles using radio-telemetry equipment
• Traveling among field sampling sites and wildlife facilities
• Checking and maintaining hoop traps
• Maintaining accurate data sheets
• Data entry
Salary: $10/hr, 37.5 hr per week; optional housing in Lake County is available at $210/month; vehicle or mileage reimbursement is provided

- US-China Collaboration on Landslide Research and Student Training is an International Research Experience for Students (IRES) program hosted by the University of Houston and the China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) in China. The 8-week IRES program will provide support for 6 U.S. students (two graduates and four undergraduates) to conduct advanced landslide research in the Three Gorges area in China during the summer.

Touch of Nature Environmental Center Conference
We would like to invite students and faculty in the Biology, Education, and the Environment, Sustainability, and Energy departments at Northern Illinois University to join us, this March 10-12th for the Student Experiential Environmental Education Conference (SEEEC.) This three day conference is open to students, teachers (formals), environmental educators (and other non-formals), and others interested in environmental ed.
During the conference, we are hosting speakers from the Adler Planetarium, National Great Rivers Research and Education Center, Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois, US Forest Service, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, and many more formal and non-formal educators from across the region.
A variety of certifications, concurrent sessions, and field trips will be offered. Spend some time on a guided paddle through Cypress Creek National Wildlife Refuge, or learn how to lead interpretive programs from a canoe. Get certified in the new Climate Change module for Project Learning Tree, or learn all about birds with a certification in Flying Wild. Teachers, join us to hear the experiences of other formal educators who have integrated environmental education into their classroom lessons, or learn how to utilize GIS with your students. Eat a meal with a grad student and rub shoulders with environmental education rockstars. Learn from a variety of educators at this multi-generational event.
Several programs and workshops offered during the event center on the upcoming solar eclipse, which graces Southern Illinois on August 21st, 2017.

Under general supervision from the Water Resources Manager, the Water Resources Specialist facilitates the regional management of the county’s water supply by coordinating efforts to protect ground and surface water quality and quantity.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents.)
- Facilitate implementation of the McHenry County Water Resources Action Plan (WRAP) by the county, municipalities and other governmental agencies, and the private sector.
- Organize and facilitate stakeholder meetings.
- Apply for and manage federal, state, and foundation grants.
- Manage the county’s ground water and stream gage monitoring program.
- Research and assist with developing regulations to protect water quality and quantity.
- Coordinate scientific studies analyzing the quality and quantity of water resources.
- Develop and deliver educational programs for children and adults.
- Prepare press releases and articles for publication.
- Educate the public and policy makers regarding various USGS and ISGS technical studies.

Education:
